Engine and Performance
Engine Type: The trike is powered by the same 1,795cc, liquid-cooled, 52-degree V-twin engine as the motorcycle. This engine is well-known for its massive torque.
Torque: It produces a claimed 116 lb-ft of torque at a low 3,500 rpm. This high torque is particularly well-suited for a trike, as it helps to easily move the heavier vehicle and provides strong, confident acceleration.
Fuel System: Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) ensures smooth, reliable power.
Transmission: A 5-speed transmission, designed to handle the high torque output.
Drivetrain: The VTX1800's shaft final drive is a key component that is typically retained in the trike conversion, which provides a very reliable and low-maintenance method of transferring power to the rear axle.
Chassis and Handling (Trike-Specific)
The most significant changes in a trike conversion are to the chassis and suspension.
Rear Axle: The single rear wheel of the motorcycle is replaced with a custom-built rear axle with two wheels. This axle often includes an independent or solid rear suspension setup.
Suspension: The trike conversion kit replaces the motorcycle's swingarm and rear shock with a new suspension system designed for a three-wheeled vehicle. This system often includes features like:
Independent Rear Suspension (IRS): Some higher-end kits offer this for improved ride comfort and stability over bumps.
Solid Axle: Many conversions use a solid axle, which is simpler and more durable but can result in a firmer ride.
Brakes: The trike conversion includes a new braking system for the two rear wheels. Often, the motorcycle's front brake remains, and a single foot pedal controls the brakes on all three wheels. A parking brake is a standard addition on trike conversions for safety.
Steering: The trike's steering is a major difference from a motorcycle. Since a trike does not lean into turns, the steering can feel heavy and requires more physical effort from the rider. Some trike conversion kits offer a "rake kit," which modifies the front fork angle to make steering easier.
Weight: A trike conversion adds a significant amount of weight to the motorcycle. A VTX1800 trike can weigh over 1,000 pounds, which contributes to its planted feel but requires more effort to maneuver at low speeds.
